SOUTHEAST REGION USCJ

WELCOME

A Word from the Asst. Director

Youth at a Glance

The Southeast Region consists of 87 congregations in 7 states, Barbados, Cuba and Puerto Rico.  Our synagogues range in size from 10 families to over 2,000 families, from small, isolated communities to major metropolitan areas.  In all nearly 40,000 families belong to affiliated Conservative congregations in our region.

The Southeast Region is committed to providing all of our congregations with a wide range of program and services.  Leaders in our synagogues receive on an on-going basis, vital information, services, programs, ideas, networking opportunities, publications, educational materials and support for your activities.

The Southeast Region is a network of “synagogues of excellence”.  Although we are spread out over a wide geographic area, we are proud of the closeness that has developed between our congregations and between our regional leadership and our synagogues.  This closeness is an on-going process, one that must be continually nurtured.  This web site is a new and vital part of that process, because it opens up the region to an even wider circle.  It is my hope that you will become an active part of the Southeast Region, your congregation’s “extended family”.

Use this web site as a link to the myriad resources for help, advice and direction.  Contact us in the regional office and let us help you build your congregation and let us help you in your own spiritual journey.

We are delighted that several of our synagogues have had congregational trips to Israel that included visits to our beautiful Fuchsberg Center in Jerusalem.  Our campus is truly a center for Conservative Jews in Israel.  Please make sure that when you, your congregation or your members visit Israel that the trip includes a visit to the Fuchsberg Center on Agron Street in the heart of Jerusalem.  For up-to-date information on activities at the Center, check our web page at www.uscj.org.il, or contact Rabbi James Lebeau (Lebeau@uscj.org), 2-10 Agron Street, P.O.B. 7456, Jerusalem 94265, Israel.

The Southeast Region coordinates Kosher travel programs for the United Synagogue.  We will once again host a wonderful Passover program.  This year, we will celebrate at the outstanding Ritz Carleton in Orlando.  For details, call our office, our special travel toll-fee number 1-866-601-USCJ, or check our web page at www.uscj.org/retreats

Gayle, Noam and Leor join me in wishing all of you happiness, health, security and peace.

Save the date – our Biennial Convention will be at the Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, November 2 – 5, 2006. Jay Wiston is the Convention Chair and is already busy planning an exciting convention with the theme “Re-envisioning and Transforming Our Synagogues: A Look into the Future.”

This summer Hazak is going to camp! June 14 – 21st Hazakniks from around the region will board airplanes, meet at a N.Y. airport and bus to the Pocono’s where we will spend a week at Block and Hexter Vacation Center in Poyntelle, PA. There we will join fellow Hazakniks from the Seaboard, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Conneticut regions for a week of exciting guest lecturers, wonderful projects, meaningful services, delicious kosher food and good old fashion fun! If you would like a brochure with more information, please give me a call.

We are very fortunate in the Southeast Region to have a wonderful Board of Directors under the leadership of Julian Brook from Birmingham, AL. If you need any assistance with synagogue concerns, please don’t hesitate to call us or one of our board members in your area. We are happy to visit your synagogue, share in your celebrations and help with any issues you may be facing.

As the year has come to an end, I would like to share some of the things that make HaNegev USY and Kadima great.

Our year began at Ramah Darom in Clayton Georgia for LTI, a jam-packed week of activities and learning with our theme of “things that make you go hmmm…”, dealing with random acts, customs and traditions in Judaism.

Next up each sub region held there own weekend for chapter President’s. These mini conventions were coordinated and lead by sub regional board members. They allowed for the opportunity for chapter presidents to network, bond and learn leadership training techniques that could help them throughout their presidencies.

This year’s regional board was off and running trying to reach out to individual chapters and making a personal connection to increase membership and Tikun Olam. Our membership for Kadima and USY were at an upswing all year long. We have also make strides towards chartering new chapters at newly joined synagogues and adult synagogues undergoing a youth growth spurt. and transition to full service congregations.

In order to create better and stronger leaders we held a Regional General Board Weekend in Clearwater, Florida. Chapter Presidents, Sub- regional and Regional General and Executive Board members were in attendance as we sang Ruach, learned about specific areas of interest in USY and had general leadership training sessions throughout the weekend. Next year we have opened up the weekend to full chapter boards throughout our entire region. It is our hope that this will further expand our leadership abilities, knowledge of USY and strengthen chapters no matter their size

Kadima has only one convention in each sub region, but there was enough energy and enthusiasm felt at all three sub regional conventions to power ten conventions. The themes for Kadima conventions dealt with disabilities, friendship and Israel. Each convention incorporated a Social Action and learning process and a time to make friends that will carry you through to USY and beyond.

CUBA MISSION

This past week, I had the privilege of joining Rabbi Neil Sandler, president Nancy Levine and 26 other members of Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Atlanta, GA on an 8 day mission to meet the Jewish community of Cuba.  We visited five congregations (three of which are affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in our Southeast Region) in three cities, Havana, Santa Clara and Cienfuegos.  We also had an opportunity to experience some traditional Cuban nightlife and tourist attractions.
