Sunday School News

Shalom,

I am very excited to be writing my first Megillah article.  I want to thank everyone for being so welcoming to my family and me.  I feel very honored to have the opportunity to be the principal at Temple Emanuel, especially since I grew up here at the shul.

I have many new ideas and fun plans for Sunday school in the coming year.  We will keep many of the same ideas that Jenefer has incorporated as well.  The teachers are the BIG picture at the school.  I will be going to them for their ideas and suggestions.

Now a little about me.  I was born in Philadelphia, and moved to Norfolk when I was three.  I attended nursery school and kindergarten at Temple Israel.  My family then moved to Virginia Beach and we joined Temple Emanuel around 1961.  I was confirmed at the shul in 1970 with a great group of kids who I still keep in touch with.  My husband Richard and I got married at Beth El where he grew up, and where we have attended with our 2 boys.  We have lived in Ocean Lakes for the past 19 years.  Both of our boys went to Hebrew Academy until middle school.  Geoff graduated from Ocean Lakes and then went to Israel on Year Course for the next year.  He is now attending TCC with hopes of being a PE teacher.  He is also the USY advisor to the Tidewater chapter.  Brandon graduates in June from First Colonial Legal Studies Academy and will attend Longwood U in the fall.  I have been the Kadima / Machar USY advisor for the past 7 years.  When I started the chapter we had 2 kids, now we have over 60 kids participating.  Each month we have a terrific event for the 4th – 8th graders. It is a great way for kids to meet other Jewish kids in the Tidewater area.  If your child was not involved before, I hope he/she will get involved now.  We have so much fun each month.

I want to thank Rabbi Mandell, JoAnn Dervay, Paula Krukin Levy, and Janet Mercadante for believing I was the ideal candidate for the Education/Youth Director position.  With the Rabbi’s vision and my dream, we should have a wonderful year for all the kids to grow and build on their Jewish religion.  I have some great programs coming up.

I also want to thank Jenefer Snyder for all her guidance and help for a smooth transition.  I want to make Sunday school fun and also an exciting time for the kids while they learn about their Jewish heritage.

Please feel free to stop by my office and introduce yourself.  I cannot wait to meet all the children.  I will be in almost everyday during the week, so if you ever have a suggestion or concern, I will be available to talk.  My door is always open.

B’Shalom,

Temple Emanuel has its own Sunday School which serves children in grades K-Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation. Classes are held at the synagogue on Sunday mornings. Students in grades 3-6 also attend the United Hebrew School (UHS) on Wednesday afternoons.

Congratulations to our United Hebrew School (UHS) students!

When students, usually at the end of the 3rd grade, complete their first year of serious Hebrew study, we acknowledge the event with a ceremony honoring them and present them with a Jewish book of importance. Congratulations to the following UHS students on their consecration:
