The 17th of Tammuz

The  17th of Tammuz commemorates the day the walls of Jerusalem were breached three weeks before the destruction of the Temple. Some people choose to fast on this day, but it is considered minor fast day.  But it is only one of four days that is observed from the break of dawn to night.

Also, there were supposedly other major occurences on this date.  For example, it is said that the 17th of Tammuz is the day Moses descended Mount Sinai and upon seeing the Golden Calf, broke the first pair of Ten Commandment tablets.

The three weeks following the 17th of Tammuz until Tisha B'Av there are certain customs that are observed.  For example, most Jews refrain from eating meat or eating luxurious food.  This is because this time is supposed to be a time of sadness.  Also, men and women refrain from shaving as well.
