The night before we were going to climb Masada I did not feel so well.  My throat hurt, I felt nauseous, so instead of going out and playing at the BEAUTIFUL Youth Hostile we were at which just happened to be having a big dance party for some Israeli teens, I decided to go to bed.

When my alarm went off at 3am the next morning I was not feeling any better.  Of course, i didn't tell any of my Madrichim (counselors) because I wanted to climb Masada!  I had heard so much about that incredible journey I could not imagine not going.

Our trip started, and the first thing that happened was our teacher who was leading us had to direct some soldiers in the right direction.  They were going on an easier path then us so they couldn't just follow us the entire way.  Then we had to climb through valleys and such.  And for the first 30 minutes I was in front.

It was a beautiful climb, until I started hyperventilating.  My tonsils had swollen so large that it was difficult for me to breath, they were blocking my airway.  Now, some of you may laugh at that, but for me, it was scary!  So I sat down, I drank some water, and then I kept going.  Honestly, I thought I'd never make it to the top.

I finally did though and I saw the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen. Looking out over the dead sea, I decided it was worth it.  To pray in a place we know other Jews prayed thousands of years ago is an amazing feeling.  There is a connection to the land that is indescribable.

Even though I almost died on my way to the top, I still think the hike up Masada was one of the more amazing of our trip.
