STATEMENT ON DIVESTMENT VOTE BY
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH USA

June 23, 2014 / 25 Sivan 5774

As the representative of 1.2 million Conservative Jews, United Synagogue believes that the Presbyterian Church USA made a grave mistake with its recent divestment vote, aligning itself squarely with groups that question Israel’s right to exist. The Church’s divestment advocates show a troubling tendency to focus their moral outrage solely on Israel, where people live daily with the threat of brutal violence from groups that espouse and support murdering innocent civilians as a legitimate tool of “resistance.”

It is particularly disturbing that the Church made its decision while remaining utterly silent on the kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers making their way home for Sabbath.

As a result of its misguided decision, we are now certain that Church leaders do not understand the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Our shared pursuit of a just peace must include the right of the Jewish people to live securely in their historic homeland.

Rabbi Steven Wernick, CEO
Richard Skolnik, International President
