What is Conservative Judaism?

Conservative Judaism is a movement appropriately defined by its motto: “Tradition and Change.” It is a movement committed to the observance of Halakhah (Jewish law) and its integration into the modern experience; a movement devoted to the religious, intellectual, spiritual, and social ideals that characterize the Jewish people.

The Conservative Movement provides a true anchor for those who actively seek to live according to the eternal principles of Jewish ethical values and Mitzvah observance in a constantly changing world through spiritual dialogue and academic discovery.

Why belong to a Conservative Synagogue?

Conservative Synagogues blend the best of traditional Judaism with contemporary living. For many of our families, the Synagogue is the center of their modern lives.

Many families take advantage of pre-school programs for our children. Whether a formal pre-school or a “mommy and me” program, young families are cherished.

All of our Synagogues have excellent religious schools that teach our children about our heritage, traditions and culture. Most have post-B’nai-Mitzvah programs to continue our children’s Jewish education. Our youth groups, Kadima and USY, provide social, cultural, and religious experiences for Jewish youth in grades 7 through 12.

Conservative Synagogues offer a host of adult educational programs as well. Hebrew language, Yiddish, Torah Study, Talmud and child rearing are among the classes that have been offered.

Senior programs are also an integral part of Conservative Synagogue life. Respect for our elders is an important part of who we are.

Our Rabbis are extensively trained in Jewish Law and practice as well as many contemporary studies.

Each Conservative Synagogue is independent, reflective of the individual needs of the congregation and community.

Statement of Purpose and Mission

Our purpose is to promote Judaism as an experience associated with joy and celebration, and with important and powerful ideas. We exist to help Conservative Jews rejoice in their Jewishness, and to view being Jewish as an essential and infinitely precious aspect of personal identity that enriches all areas of one’s life.

Our message is best transmitted not through preaching or indoctrination, but rather through authentic Jewish living — through the day-to-day celebrations of life; through prayer, study, and song; through Shabbat and holy-day observance; through eating, learning, and sharing.

Our mission is to communicate this message and to provide to our members the necessary resources and support to live as fully participating Conservative Jews.
