A Message From Your Encampment Co-Chairs --- 2006-05-16

If you would like to be on a committee for encampment, email us with your top three choices for the position you would like as soon as possible so we can start working. Encampment committees are extremely important for encampment and we need capable and responsible people to run them. It is a lot of fun and it looks great for college applications that you took a leadership role in such a large event. Even if you are going on a summer program, you are still eligible to be a committee co-chair so don't hesitate to send in your applications. Below is a list of committees that you might want to join and how many people are going to be chosen for each. We ask that if you are applying for talent shows, macabiah, or bible bowl that you include a short essay for why you would like this position and why it is a good position for you. If you have any questions about any of the committees, please email us and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. The application deadline is June 1st.

Bible Bowl - 4 chairs (1 per division)
Maccabiah - 4 chairs (1 per division)
Talent show - 3 Chairs (Seniors preferred)
Photography - 4 chairs
Banquet - 3-4 Chairs
Shabbat - 7-8 Chairs
Shabbat-o-Grams - 6-7
Israel Day - 4-5 Chairs
Oneg Play - 3-4 Chairs
Bunk Program (for first day) - 3 Chairs
To join one of the committes, you can email us at encampmentcochairs@gmail.com

If you have any questions again, don't hesitate to email!
Your Encampment Co-chairs,
Matt, Frank, Eryn, and Noga

2006-2007 Executive Board --- 2006-05-15

Chazak USY-

It is my distinct honor and pleasure to present you with the 2006-2007 Chazak Executive Board:

President: Shira Siegel
Israel Affairs VP: Ariella Kristal
Religion/Education VP: Rose Faber
Social Actions/Tikkun Olam VP: Ariel Zuckerman
Membership/Kadima VP: Pam Skop
Communications VP: Shira Farkas

On behalf of the outgoing board, congratulations and good luck to the new board. Also, we would like to thank all those people who ran for office, showing their commitment to the Chazak Division.

One year ago, I posted a very similar announcment to this one, however congratulating different people on winning elections. Two kinnusim, plenty of dances, eight days of encampment, one kallah, one convention, two websites, and 42 posts later, I can say for sure what I predicted in that first email: It has been an amazing year. Thank you so much to everyone who has made this year a success. Although it would be impossible to list the names of everyone who has contributed to this year, it is worth recognizing the Chazak General Board for their hard work. Also, the outgoing Executive Board, who have been so great to work with:

President: Brian Steinmetz
Israel Affairs VP: Jenna Brofsky
Religion/Education VP: Ariel Siegel
Social Actions/Tikkun Olam VP: Shari Farberman
Membership/Kadima VP: Marisa Mittleman
Communications VP: Sam Guzik

Mazal Tov and Yasher Koach to the rest of the board on a job well done.

On a more personal note, I want to appologize for not being able to say good-bye to everone at RC because I needed to leave early for a family event. My USY experience has been shaped by every USYer in the divison and the region, and I am thankful for that. If at any time anyone needs help with anything or just wants to contact me, please feel free to email me (sam.guzik@gmail.com), IM me (sguzik9588), or call me. I hope to stay in touch with as many of you as possible.

Good luck to the incoming board and thank you for four amazing years.

This is Sam Guzik, reporting live from Jerusalem. Good night and good luck.

Sam Guzik
USY Has-Been, 2006-End of time
Chazak Divisional Communications VP, 2005-2006

Senior Section --- 2006-05-04

Attention Seniors: If you have not already done so, please visit the senior page on the METNY website and fill out the contact information database to help you remain in touch with USYers after graduating. The database will be sent out after RC.

Darfur Information --- 2006-04-10

USY will be represented at the upcoming ralley in support of Sudan through a bus leaving from the Central Office in Manhattan. More information is available on the upcoming events page.

What is Darfur? Why Should I Care?
Since February 2003, a government-backed militia known as Janjaweed (which in Arabic means, "evil men on horseback") has been engaging in a genocidal campaign to wipe out communities of African tribal farmers in Darfur, Sudan. Millions of people now live in displacement camps lacking adequate food, water, shelter, healthcare, and sanitation. The genocide in Darfur has left over 400,000 people dead and over two million displaced.

Genocide is a Jewish issue.
Because we have said "never again."
... because we have asked why the world stood silent.
... because we know what it means to watch as our children, our parents, our brothers and sisters were slaughtered.
... because in Jewish tradition saving one life is saving the world.
... because of all that, and because we must ...
Help us fight back.

For more information, visit the Upcoming Events page.

Chag Sameach --- 2006-04-09

On behalf of the Executive board and the Chazak Division, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Chag Sameach and a Zissen Pesach. To get you into the spirit, you can check out this One Minuite Seder. (Click the picture to start the video)

Remember the two Passover Dances that will occur on Sunday April 16 and Monday April 17.

Boat Ride Pictures and Apps --- 2006-04-02

Hey all! Pictures from METNY Boat Ride have been posted to the website and are now available for all to see in the pictures section.

Remember to download your application for Regional Convention (for 9-12 graders) or for Eighth Grade Experience (for 8th graders) and send it in. These are sure to be two amazing events and you wouldn't want to get shut out because you didn't get your application in on time.

Also, remember to keep an eye out for information about the two upcoming divisional dances during Passover. Both are sure to be great.

Upcoming Events Stuff --- 2006-03-29

Remember that during Passover, Chazak holds two great dances. Information will be available on the website.

Finally, as work on the Chazak Yearbook begins, Shira and I need your help. Shira, your yearbook editor, needs pictures---lots of them. Pictures from every USY event this year, pictures of you, pictures of your friends, pictures of water buffalo...well maybe not, but the first few for sure. You can send your pictures (or a link to your online photo site, ie webshots, flicker!, ofoto, etc) to chazakusy@gmail.com.

Secondly, I need your help. I have no taste in music. None. Whatsoever. To make the yearbook as cool as possible, I want your contributions for songs to play in the background of our DVD. You can send files for consideration to chazakusy@gmail.com. Also, if you would like to recommend music to diversify my taste in music, feel free---though that is an extra, bonus part of the task.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

METNY Boat Ride --- 2006-03-24

METNY Boat Ride is coming up soon. I know it seem like short notice, but its only two weeks away on Sunday, April 2. Because it is so soon, it is important that you RSVP as soon as possible (applications were technically due earlier this week; we have extended the deadline).

That's right, drop everything you're doing. Now. I said drop it. Good. Now open the RSVP form. You'll need to fax it to the METNY office (212.533.0400) as soon as possible. Also, you should call Regional Communications Vice President Jon Alter's cell phone (___.___.____) and leave a message with your name, phone number, and the message, "I want to go on the METNY Boat Ride! And I Love Lamp!" Calling Jon Alter is important so that we can get an idea of how many people are coming.

So, stop reading this email and go sign up. Go! Boat Ride should be an amazing event, and I hope to see as many of you as possible.

Reminders and Info for Events --- 2006-03-20

Hey all! I hope that you all had a good Purim and that all is well with you. There are a few upcoming events next few weeks which you should remember. Most of them are open to the entire region, you should be sure to RSVP or mark you calendars.

  • Eigth/Ninth Grade Event---This special event for 8th and 9th graders will be taking place at the Solomon Schechter Day School on Saturday night, March 25. You don't need to RSVP, however you should bring all your friends. This is open to all Chazak and Rakevet USYers. You can see an informational flier online.
  • METNY Boat Ride---The METNY Boat Ride will take place on Sunday, April 2. There is an informational flier on the Upcoming Events page; you need to RSVP with your youth director as soon as possible for this event. This event is open to the entire region.

Chazak Spring Kinnus --- 2006-03-12

Spring Kinnus was amazing. There is no other way to put it. From opening ceremonies to amazing ruach during shabbat, from our Dinner Dance/Awards Ceremony to our great social actions project on Sunday morning, everything was fun and exciting.

If you missed the Kinnus or if you want to see pictures of all you great friends, you will be able to check out the pictures on the pictures page. Also, the video from the Awards Ceremony will be available for download. If you have problems, let me know.

Remember to keep an eye out for information about Chazak's special 8th/9th grade program, the "Big Event" with the Jewish Teen Leadership Council, and Regional Convention. As always, feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions.

Spring Kinnus Applications --- 2006-02-26

Hey Chazak! Guess what? It's almost March! It's hard to belive, I know, but the year is really going by quickly.

Being that March is almost here, you should get your Spring Kinnus Applications in as soon as possible. Spring Kinnus is the weekend of March 10-12 at Temple Israel in Great Neck, and it is sure to be an amazing event.

You can download an application either in .pdf format or in .doc format. You can find more information on the upcoming events page or you can contact the board using the form or by IMing chazakusy1. I can't wait to see you at Kinnus.

The Kallah that Never Ends! --- 2006-02-13

Hey Chazak! This past weekend was METNY's Mid-Winter Kallah. This past weekend was also the largest blizzard in the history of New York. Coincidence? I think not.

Kallah, which was scheduled to run from Friday afternoon to Sunday Afternoon, was unexpectedly extended Yesterday when snow prevented buses from reaching the Holiday Inn in Suffern. What was already an amazing weekend was made even better as USYers got the chance to stay together for an extra night.

During the afternoon, we had a Communications program (assorted children's games including Simon Says and Duck, Duck, Goose) and a competition between divisions. At night, we watched Anchorman.

See pictures from the website on the pictures page of the website. If you can learn anything from this event, it is this: anything can happen at USY events.

Chazak Forum --- 2006-02-02

Hey Chazak! As a continuation to this week's them of communications improvements, it is my pleasure to announce to you the newest component of the website: the Chazak Forum. Although it's true that Rakevet had one first, this is our chance to show them how much cooler we are.

While you once had to wait for Kinnus to chat with your friends about everything from how cool that last dance was to what was Moses thinking in the last Torah portion, now you can do it 24 X 6 from the comfort of your own home. You can discuss topics relating to all that USY has to offer---Israel Affairs, Religious/Education/Culture, Social Action/Tikkun Olam, Membership/Kadima, and Communications---or totally random topics.

You can check out the forum, and when you see it, you'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about it. If, however, you have any questions, you can email me or IM chazakusy1. I hope that you take full advantage of this new resource.

New Photo Gallery --- 2006-01-30

Hey Chazak! I hope that you are all getting back to school without too much difficulty. As a gift to make your rentry to second semester as easy as possible, I hereby unveil the new Chazak Photo Gallery. Complete with thumbnails and everything, you can now view pictures from previous events in an organized fashion.

To make the Gallery as cool as possible, you should send all your pictures from previous events to me so I can load them onto the site. Don't like the way you look in a picture? Take embarssing pictures of your friends and send them to me!

Also, check out the Upcoming Events page for Spring Kinnus Applications and new events which have been added to the calendar.

Note: The subliminal message in the last Chazak Email Update was "INEEDPICTURESFORTHEYEARBOOK"

Spring Kinnus Applications --- 2006-01-24

Well, it's that time again: Spring Kinnus is just around the corner. Spring Kinnus this year will be held at Temple Hillel in Great Neck. This is the first event which eighth graders can attend. Applications are now available on the Upcoming Events page.

You can download this application in either .pdf format or .doc format Please feel free to contact me via email or by IMing chazakusy1 to get more information.

As a side note, all those people who are interested in running for Chazak Executive Board should keep their eyes out for annoucments regarding letters of intent, petitions, and eligibility.

Two Elephants are Sitting in a Bathtub... --- 2005-01-04

So, two elephants are sitting in a bathtub and the first says to the second, "Pass your pictures from all the USY events this year". The second responds, "No pictures, Radio!"

That's right, just like the first elephant sitting in the bathtub, Chazak USY wants your pictures for the website and, more importantly, the Chazak Yearbook . It may seem early to be thinking about the yearbook, but, we would like to start working on it as soon as possible.

In order for us to have as many pictures as possible---and with as many people in them as possible---we need you to submit yours. You can send the pictures as attachments to chazakusy@gmail.com. Don't know how to send attachments? Get in touch with us and we'll let you know how to. Do you have Ofoto, Flicker!, Webshots, or a similar service? No problem, just send us the link and we'll download the pictures ourselves.

We want pictures from any and all divisional, regional, and international events since Regional Convention last year, so don't hesistate to send anything. Have videos? Even better! Send those over as well.

If you have any questions, feel free to email the new address, use the contact form, IM chazakusy1, fire signal flares, or use the bat light.

Happy Chanukah! --- 2005-12-21

Happy Chanukah everyone! We've made it half-way through the year and so far its been great. All of this year's events---from Encampment, to Fall Kinnus, to our dances---have been great, and everyone has had an amazing time.

That said, it is not too late to become involved later in the year. There are still plenty of events coming up---like Midwinter Kallah, Spring Kinnus, Regional Convention, and much more. These events should all live up to the standard which we have set for the first half of the year and should make this year one of the best ever.

With all that said, I would like to wish all of you and your families a Happy Chanukah on behalf of Chazak USY.

Lots of Great Events Coming Up --- 2005-12-07

Hey Chazak! The year's really going by pretty fast---can you believe its already December? Yup, that's right, and you know what that means---IC is coming up! For anyone who signed up to go to IC, you should be receiving your confirmations shortly.

Also, it is worth noting a few other upcoming USY events in the next few weeks. On Saturday night, December 17 there are two events for you to choose between. The first is HERJC's Chanukah Cozy, a dance at the Hewlett East Rockaway Jewish Center. The second is the Blue Fringe Concert at Temple Beth El, New Rochelle. For more information about these---and the other great events that are taking place as the year comes to a close---check the events page.

Also, any chapters interested in setting up a chapter website, mailing list, or other communications "thing" should feel free to contact me.

Pictures, Turkey, and Fun --- 2005-11-25

Hey Chazak! I hope that you are all enjoying Thanksgiving break; I know that I needed the rest.

Guess what you can now find on the pictures page? Pictures! Well, more specifically, pictures from Chazak Fall Kinnus and Chazak's Invitational Turkey Hop. Guess what else you can find there? Your pictures...but first you have to email them to me or send me the link to your online photo album (ie. Flicker!, Webshots, Yahoo!Pictures, etc).

Keep checking back as the Upcoming Events for the second half of the year will be posted shortly.

And remember, Turkeys don't kill people, people kill people...save the Turkeys!

Chazak Fall Kinnus! --- 2005-11-20

This weekend's Chazak Fall Kinnus was amazing! Despite having a slightly smaller Kinnus than normal, over 80 USYers came together at the Shelter Rock Jewish Center and had an amazing time.

From our opening video, soon to be available on the website, to amazing Ruach, to our Dance-Off for SA/TO and so much more, we all had an amazing time. Pictures and video will soon be available on the pictures page. If you have any pictures from Kinnus, please feel free to email them to me, and I will post them promptly.

Also, you can see the Fall Kinnus edition of the Chazy online in .pdf format.(Warning-This is a large file (approx. 4 MB) and may take a few miniutes to load.

I hope to see everyone at the Turkey Hop; for more information, visit the upcoming events page.

RECness --- 2005-11-08

Hey Chazak! So, as of today, there are two new features to the site: the weekly dvar torah and the study with a buddy page. The weekly dvar torah will be posted and archived to the website, as well as sent out to the divison, usually on Thursday night.

Study With a Buddy, is an initiative to help people share their ritual strengths and learn from others by learning from and teaching other USYers. If you have any questions about Study With A Buddy, you can contact the Chazak REC Ariel Siegel.

Please fill out this form to help Ariel plan future REC programs.

Chazy...All the Cool kids 're doin' it! --- 2005-10-28

Hey Everyone, Fall Kinnus is coming up, and you know what that means...the First Edition of the Chazy!!! That's right, the first edition of Chazak's own newsletter will be appearing at a Fall Kinnus near you.

The one element of the Chazy that's missing is your contributions. That's right, in an effort to make the Chazy as great as possible, we are going to need contributions from as many people as possible.

It dosen't matter if your're on board, a chapter vice president, or a USYer with no title, we want contributions from everyone. There is no topic, so you can write about anything from why you love USY to why you love chicken soup, from why Israel is so important to why this year's executive board is the greatest ever (just kidding). If you have any question, or would like to submit your contribution, please email the Communications VP or the Chazy Editor. I look forward to recieving your contributions!

Fall Kinnus is Coming! --- 2005-10-20

"Fall Kinnus is Coming! Fall Kinnus is Coming!" Paul Revere called as he went from town to town on Long Island. Ok. So I have the time period, location, and mantra wrong but you get the picture: Fall Kinnus is just around the corner.

The due date for Fall Kinnus applications (November 4th) is quickly approaching so you should get your applications in as soon as possible. You can get an application in .pdf format here or in .doc format here. For more information about Fall Kinnus, you can visit the Upcoming Events Page.

Recent Website Updates --- 2005-05-26

Over the past few days, I have added a number of features to the site. Amoung these are the pictures page, the annoucments page, and the member information page. These are all pretty self explanatory; the annoucments page will be a listing of every post to the website, the member information page has a form so that we (the board) have the information to get in touch with you, and the pictures page has pictures. Feel free to look around these features, and please fill out the information form so that we can get in touch with you.
