Ofek Hadash: A New Horizon: METNY’s New Direction

METNY's biennial convention took place on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at Temple Hillel in Valley Stream, NY, bringing together top scholars from the Conservative Movement and outstanding speakers to give synagogue leadership, both lay and professional, an exciting opportunity to learn from one another and enrich their congregations.

At the convention, Biennial Synagogue Awards were given to several of METNY's member congregations. To see the congregations that entered, download this spreadsheet.

Presidential Certificates

The METNY Regional office would be pleased to prepare a Certificate of Appreciation for your congregation’s outgoing president, to be presented at an appropriate ceremony. Requests for the Certificate must be made on synagogue letterhead, and include the name of the president, years served and date of presentation. The requests should be sent to METNY, 330 W. 38th St. Suite 205, New York, N.Y. 10018 or Faxed to 212.533.0400.

In addition, the Region very much wants to be part of significant celebrations in the life of your congregation. When your congregation is celebrating a significant anniversary or occasion, the Region would be happy to prepare and present an appropriate certificate to your congregation. About Conservative Judaism

The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism was founded in 1913 by Dr. Solomon Schechter as the association of Conservative synagogues in North America. The United Synagogue serves as a resource to its affiliated congregations and works to formulate a Conservative Jewish response to pressing social and religious issues.

Conservative Judaism attempts to combine a positive attitude toward modern culture, acceptance of critical secular scholarship regarding Judaism's sacred texts, and also commitment to Jewish observance. Conservative Judaism believes that scholarly study of Jewish texts indicates that Judaism has constantly been evolving to meet the needs of the Jewish people in varying circumstances, and that a central halachic (Jewish legal) authority can continue the halachic evolution today.
