September 2007
What's Happening

Operation Isaiah - United Synagogue's food drive, Project Isaiah, culminates on erev Yom Kippur, when we gather for Kol Nidre. This program is inspired by the haftarah for Yom Kippur morning, where Isaiah reminds us that teshuvah, atonement, requires not only tefillah, prayer, but tzedakah, charity, as well. A how-to manual can help you develop the program in your congregation. Funds raised by Operation Isaiah go to the Corners of Our Fields, a project run by Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger.

Virtual Hevruta from the Conservative Yeshiva - Anyone who is interested in furthering his or her Jewish education is invited to join the online hevruta program offered by the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center's Conservative Yeshiva.

Last Chance to Buy Lulav and Etrog Set - United Synagogue offers you the chance to buy a lulav and etrog set from Israel. The deadline is September 18; Sukkot begins the evening of September 26 this year.

Project Bogrim – Help Us To Reconnect - When a former USYer, Nativ-nik, Schechter or Conservative Yeshiva student, or anyone else who once was connected with the Conservative movement reaches out to a synagogue, looking to replace what once was so dear, what should you do? How should you respond? Project Bogrim can help. Here's a letter about a new program, which offers advice for synagogue leaders about how to reach out to people who call them through Project Reconnect.

New Ideas

Congregational Standards – United Synagogue has revised the rules that govern congregational life, and in so doing define the community life of a Conservative Jew.

Bragging Rights

USY Looks at the Numbers - For the 52nd summer, United Synagogue’s United Synagogue Youth ran summer programs. This year, USY took more than 700 Jewish teenagers across the continent and around the world. Read department director Jules Gutin’s reflections on a successful summer.

Rabbi Moshe Edelman

Koach’s Rabbi Winick To Teach at Brandeis Rabbinics Conference - Rabbi Elyse Winick, assistant director of Koach, United Synagogue’s program for college students, has been invited to teach at the Conference on Rabbinic Literature: Bridging Scholarship and Pedagogy at Brandeis University at the end of July.

Daylong Educators' Seminar - On July 31, seven experienced educators who have accepted new positions in our synagogues met at Rapaport House in New York for a daylong seminar led by Serene Victor, our consultant for synagogue education. The educators have continued an informal support network. The program is likely to be repeated next year; for more information, email Serene Victor.

Leadership Training Offered - Rabbi Moshe Edelman, director of the department of congregational standards, offered leadership training to 40 people at Adath Israel Congregation in Cincinnati in mid-August.

Archaeological tour with Dr. Garbriel Barkay of Bar Ilan University

Greening Fuchsberg - The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center sponsored a green fair, showcasing ways to help the world’s sustainability. The fair aimed at raising Jerusalem's residents awareness of the environment's fragility and to show ways to help keep it -- and us -- green. The fair also was a step is establishing a community of people in Jerusalem whose shared goal is to protect the world's resources.

Summer Highlights - This summer, the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center offered a range of programs, aimed at both Israelis and visitors. Programs included “Great Cantors of the Golden Age and Great Cantors in Cinema,” presented by Cantor Murray E. Simon of the Jewish Center in Princeton, New Jersey; “The Jerusalem That Was Destroyed on Tisha B’Av, 70 C.E.” by Professor Rabbi Lee Levine of the Hebrew University, which included a tour of the Israel Museum’s model of the Jerusalem in the late second Temple period, and as shown here, a tour of the sifting site at the archeological dig at Emek Zurim lead by archeologist Dr. Gabriel Barkay of Bar Ilan University, director of the Temple Mount Sifting Project.

Gemilut Hesed - Over the summer, the Gemilut Hesed program at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center has matched many visiting volunteers with social-action projects; many visitors feel that their trips to Israel are not complete until they can help others. Miles and Alida Bunder, two USY alumni who made aliyah, set up a program in Maale Adumim to help the needy; many visitors donated many much-needed items there. Students from the Conservative Yeshiva volunteered twice a week in Hansen Gardens, an ecological and bird sanctuary; to work with new Russian and Ethiopian immigrants in Yotzer Or, a Masorti congregation in Talpiot; and to work with the elderly at Idan Hazahav.

Fuchsberg Non-Capital Programs Campaign - There are a variety of non-capital programs that support the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center. This is in addition to the capital campaign, which has naming opportunities ranging from $5,000 to $5 million. The non-capital programs, which must be funded on an annual basis, strengthen Conservative Judaism for both North Americans and Israelis. They include programs for Russian immigrants, scholarships for Conservative Yeshiva students, and gemilut hesed projects. Funding opportunities range from $5,000 to $38,000 a year. For information, email our development director, Ron Friedman.
