Law Committee Decision - As the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards decides the halakhic status of gay men and lesbians, the United Synagogue offers education on the issue. There are links available on our homepage, at the top of the bulletin board.
Shabbat Hazak - On January 6 – that’s 16 Tevet – synagogues across the movement will celebrate the achievements of members of Hazak, the group for people 55 and older. Project Etgar - Our education department and the Melton Research Center of the Jewish Theological Seminary offer the movement’s congregational schools Project Etgar, a modular curriculum for middle school students. The application is due January 12.
Koach Kallah - The 2007 Koach Kallah is set for February 22 to February 25 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Students from across North America will gather for a Shabbat full of ruach, study, music, davvening, and lots of fun. Rabbi Pamela Barmash, the director of Jewish, Islamic, and Near Eastern studies at Washington University in St. Louis, will be scholar-in-residence. Sulam - Sulam, the training program that helps new synagogue leaders climb the ladder of Jewish knowledge and practice, will be held twice in 2007. Mark your calendars and plan to join us – March 8-11 in Newark, New Jersey, or March 15-18 in Toronto, Ontario.
Imun - Imun, the week-long retreat where newly emerging lay leaders can hone their synagogue skills, including layning and writing and delivering a dvar Torah, will meet at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires from July 8 to July 16.
Summertime Always Returns – USY Plans Ahead - This summer, like every summer, USY offers a range of programs for teenagers. For the summer of 2007, programs include Classic USY on Wheels; USY on Wheels, Mission: Mitzvah; USY on Wheels, East; Outdoor Adventure, Pacific Northwest; Summer in the City; Israel Adventure; Eastern Europe/Israel Pilgrimage, Israel Pilgrimage/Poland Seminar; Spain/Israel Pilgrimage; and Etgar! Come to USY High This Spring! - USY High, the youth department’s joint program with Ramah Israel Programs for high school students, is accepting applications for the spring semester. Students spend two months living and learning in Israel, using the country as their classroom and receiving high school credit for the experience.
Your Child Is Now Online - The education department's Your Child is now available online; it provides parents of young children with information on how to raise a healthy, happy -- and happily Jewish -- child.
Sukkot in Biloxi - Adas Israel Congregation in Washington, DC., sent 10 sets of lulavim and etrogim to Congregation Beth Israel in Biloxi. Here, some Beth Israel children enjoy the fruits of Adas Israel’s love.
Project Reconnect - More than 150 synagogues participated in Project Reconnect's Home For The Holidays, which placed Jews without High Holiday tickets in seats in United Synagogue-affiliated congregations across the continent. Many newspapers covered the story, many through this AP article.
Hazak - A group of 50 Hazak members from the Seaboard region had a wonderful time on a trip to Richmond, Virginia.

Fall Conventions - Four of our regions – Seaboard, Connecticut Valley, Pacific Southwest, and Great Lakes and Rivers - held their conventions in October. Southeast, Northern California, New England, New Jersey, Mid-Continent, METNY, and Empire all have their conventions planned for this month.
Out of Egypt, Into Philly - In response to one show of historic proportions – the King Tut exhibit that has been wowing museum-goers around the world and is slated for Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute – the Conservative community in the Mid-Atlantic region is matching it with more history. For the first time in a very long time, all of the area’s Conservative institutions, including United Synagogue, USY, Men’s Club, Women’s League, the Rabbinical Assembly, the Cantors’ Assembly, the Jewish Theological Seminary, Camp Ramah in the Poconos, the Jewish Educators’ Assembly, the North American Association of Synagogue Executives, and others – are all joining for a day-long program.
Nativ - Students on Nativ, United Synagogue’s year-long gap year program, celebrated the High Holy Days and then started touring Israel; after Sukkot they began the semester at Hebrew University or the Conservative Yeshiva. Nativ students live at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center for half or all of their time abroad. In October, they joined in Marom Day, the international activity day for young adults in the Conservative/Masorti movement around the world.
Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center - United Synagogue’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center offers first-time and veteran visitors to Israel a dazzling range of study and travel opportunities.
The Conservative Yeshiva - The Conservative Yeshiva has installed a new interactive web-based data management and communication system that will allow it to keep in much better contact with students and alumni, and it has established an alumni association. In late October the association held the “Alumni Evening of Learning” at Congregation Shaare Zedek in Manhattan.
Beit Tarbut Classes - Beit Tarbut’s classes have begun. They include courses in drumming, humor, art, writing, and storytelling.
Learning at and about our Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center - The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism is immensely proud of its Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, Conservative Jews’ home in the homeland.
The Conservative Yeshiva at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center offers three online learning opportunities. Rabbi Mordecai Silverstein, senior teacher of midrash and Talmud, writes a Haftarah commentary every week. Yeshiva cofounder and mishna and Talmud teacher Dr. Josh Kulp produces the online Mishna Yomit (Daily Mishna) study program for United Synagogue. The Yeshiva’s rosh yeshiva, faculty members, and students all contribute to the Divre Torah page on the Yeshiva’s website.

United Synagogue’s Conservative Yeshiva Year Program - The Conservative Yeshiva at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center offers Jews of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to study classic Jewish texts in a vibrant, open-minded, egalitarian community. Two New Rabbinical Assembly Publications - This month, the Book Service features two new publications from the Rabbinical Assembly.
Canon Without Closure: Torah Commentaries by the Jewish Theological Seminary’s former chancellor, Dr. Ismar Schorsch, is a collection of commentaries that provide insight into the weekly Torah reading. $34.95.

USY Convention - So far more than 1,300 people are expected at the 56th annual USY international convention, which is set for December 24 through 28 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place. During those five days USYers will talk and think about social action projects, summer program reunions, educational programs, and more. SSDSA Meeting - The Solomon Schechter Day School Association’s lay and professional leaders meet for the group’s biennial conference in Boca Raton, Florida, from December 10 through December 12. The conference theme will be Commitment, Covenant and Community; the conference will include a discussion on recruiting and supporting new heads of school. At the conference, at the Boca Raton Renaissance Hotel, participants will have the chance to network and learn fromeach other as they look at the challenges that face Schechter day schools. United Synagogue’s next biennial convention will be held from Thursday, Nov. 29 - Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at the new Rosen Shingle Creek Resort and Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.
