New Ideas

Who Believes What? - Each month, we will provide you with an article about an issue that United Synagogue staff members are talking and thinking about. To inaugurate this feature, the Education Department’s Rabbi Robert Abramson discusses results of a study investigating what Conservative Jews believe, how they observe, and how beliefs and observance connect.

Bragging Rights

At the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center - About 90 people came to the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center to watch the Super Bowl. An unofficial survey showed that about 80 percent of them were Steelers fans, so most left happy.

Thirteen United Synagogue congregations and two schools were represented among the visitors at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center over Presidents Day weekend last month. Some visitors had Shabbat meals at the Center’s guest house, and others learned at shiurim at the Conservative Yeshiva or toured the Center.

Around the USCJ

Koach Kallah - About 160 college students met to Listen for God at the Koach Kallah late last month at Ohio State University. Students from colleges across North America gathered to learn, sing, celebrate, daven, and grow spiritually and emotionally. They were joined by Scholar-in-Residence Amy Eilberg and singer Neshama Carlebach.

Schechter On Line - The Solomon Schechter Day School Association now has its own website. Check it out for the latest news about affiliated schools, as well as information about the overall education policy behind the movement.

Torah in Toronto - Rabbi David Golinkin of the Schechter Institute in Israel talked about Judaism and modernity at the annual Torah in Toronto program last month. More than 160 people, representing shuls in greater Toronto, Hamilton, and London, packed sessions on such topics as “Halacha and Technology,” “Intermarriage and Outreach,” “Ecology and the Bible,” and “Judaism and the Internet.”
