What's Happening

Tzohar Biloxi - There are many years' worth of cleanup work to be done in Biloxi; to help repair Biloxi is to help repair the world. Learn how United Synagogue can help you with its new program, Tzohar Biloxi, a window of help and hope.

Come Home for the Holidays - As it did last year, Project Reconnect, United Synagogue’s alumni association for everyone who has been a member of any Conservative movement youth group, is matching people up with synagogues for the High Holidays. If you will be away from home this holiday season, or if you have just moved to a new town and have not yet joined a synagogue, click on Project Reconnect’s website or go directly to Home For The Holidays. There is likely to be a synagogue near you that would love to welcome you home.

5768 Calendar Art Contest - This year, as every year, we are asking our affiliated synagogues to send us entries for our calendar photo contest. But this year we’re trying something a bit different. We would like the 5768 (2007 - 2008) United Synagogue Calendar to feature photographs of architectural or structural elements from Conservative synagogues. So if your building is particularly old, unusual, or striking in some way, either inside or out, please send us a photograph. We’re looking for photos of facades, walls, windows, stonework, brickwork, roofs, or any other architectural feature; interior woodwork, paneled walls, coffered ceilings, carved bimahs, or anything else that is unusual and beautiful. It also should photograph well -- the higher quality the photo, the more likely it will be to win the contest.

USY In The Summertime - More than 800 USYers and staff are participating in one of USY’s summer programs in 2006. From traveling cross country on USY on Wheels and USY on Wheels Mission: Mitzvah, to exploring the great outdoors on the Outdoor Adventure programs in the Pacific Northwest, to studying and living in New York City on Summer in the City, to experiencing Israel and/or Europe on one of the many Israel Pilgrimage programs, this summer USY offers something for everyone. You too can experience the summer of a lifetime next year.

Imun - Imun, the seminar leadership program for synagogue lay leaders, is designed to strengthen lay leaders' skills. Imun participants learn the basics of reading Torah, leading services, and presenting a d'var Torah. This year, Imun will be held at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires in Wingdale, New York, from August 6 to August 14. For more information, call Rabbi Paul Drazen at (212) 533-7800, ext. 2612, or email him at drazen@uscj.org.

Sulam - Sulam, the training program that helps new synagogue leaders climb the ladder of Jewish knowledge and practice, will be held twice in 2007. Mark your calendars and plan to join us – March 8-11 in Newark, New Jersey, and March 15-18 in Toronto, Ontario.

United Synagogue’s Conservative Yeshiva Summer Program - The Conservative Yeshiva’s 2006 summer program provides studentsof all ages and backgrounds with the opportunity to study the classic texts and ideas of Judaism, including Talmud, Tanach, halacha, tefillah, and Jewish thought. The two three-week sessions are scheduled for July 2-July 20 and July 23-August 10; coursework does not repeat and students may attend either or both. For more information and an application email Yeshiva@uscj.org, call 011-972-2-622-3116, or click here for more information.

United Synagogue’s Conservative Yeshiva Year Program - The Conservative Yeshiva at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center offers Jews of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to study classic Jewish texts in a vibrant, open-minded, egalitarian community. Study can be full-time or part-time, on a short or long-term basis; some scholarships are available. For more information and an application, email Yeshiva@uscj.org, call 011-972-2-622-3116, or click here for more information.

New Ideas

Home for the Holidays - Project Reconnect, United Synagogue's program for alumni of any of the Conservative movement's youth programs, is offering Come Home for the Holidays for a second year. The program matches Conservative Jews with High Holiday seats in many synagogues across North America. Here, Gabriel Taraday of Washington talks about his experience coming home for the holidays with Project Reconnect.

Bragging Rights

Kesher L’Yisrael II - This summer, Project Reconnect assembled a trip to Israel; Kesher L’Yisrael II participants enjoyed a private David Broza concert, met with “lonely soldiers” -- IDF members who do not have relatives in Israel – and the girlfriends or fiancees of soldiers who died protecting their country; spent Shabbat at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, and toured the country. At a meeting with Israel Supreme Court President Aharon Barak, Barak, in the Jerusalem Post’s words, “dropped a potential bombshell” when he told the group that“Israelis are being deprived of their rights by being prohibited from marrying in civil ceremonies.”

Read more about the trip.

Full House at Fuchsberg - The Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, already packed with students at the Conservative Yeshiva’s various program, with USYers, and with other visitors, plans to welcome five Conservative rabbis and their congregations on July 8. About 200 USYers and 175 congregants will be the biggest group ever gathered at the Center for Shabbat lunch. The rabbis are Jay Kornsgold of Beth El Synagogue in East Windsor, New Jersey, Aaron Krupnick of Congregation Beth El in Voorhees, New Jersey, David Nesson of the Morristown Jewish Center in Morristown, New Jersey, David Rose of Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac, Maryland, and Stewart Vogel of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills, California.

Hazak Retreat 2006 - In June, Hazak, United Synagogue’s group for adults 55 and older, went on retreat to Block and Hexter Vacation Center in northeastern Pennsylvania. They slept in rustic lakeside cabins, listened to talks, learned, laughed, listened to klezmer, listened to opera, ate, played games, and developed into a community. One of the highlights was Shabbat – they celebrated Kabbalat Shabbat in an outdoor pavilion as the sun was setting, dragon-flies skimmed the surface of the lake, and ducks and their ducklings floated nearby. At week’s end, participants received certificates in “Jewish Living, Learning and Laughter.”

Next year’s Hazak retreat – the third annual one – is set for June 13, 2007. More information is available at United Synagogue’s regional offices.

Joining the Framework of Excellence - The religious school at Congregation Beth Israel of Bangor, Maine, recently was named a Framework of Excellence school. Here, from left, committee chair Jay Smith; principal Lisa Franck; our New England regional director, Aaron Kischel; the congregation’s president, Diane Weitman; and its rabbi, David Cantor, display their certificate.

Ave Atque Vale and Mazal Tov! - United Synagogue’s Richard Moline, director of the Koach program, gave the closing benediction in front of 25,000 people gathered at the National Mall in Washington for George Washington University’s commencement in May. Rich’s son Noah was among the graduates. Here, he stands with the university’s president, Dr. Stephen Joel Trachtenberg.

Around the USCJ

Learning at and about our Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center - The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism is immensely proud of its Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, Conservative Jews’ home in the homeland.

The Conservative Yeshiva at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center offers three online learning opportunities. Yeshiva cofounder and Mishna and Talmud teacher Dr. Josh Kulp produces the online Mishna Yomit (Daily Mishna) study program for United Synagogue. The Yeshiva’s rosh yeshiva, faculty members, and students all contribute to the Divre Torah page on the Yeshiva’s website.
