January 2008
Bragging Rights

2007 International Biennial Convention - Our convention, which drew delegates from across North America to Orlando for five days of learning, networking, praying, and growing, was a great success. Our convention coverage includes the d’var Torah about the meaning of Conservative Judaism given by our executive vice president, Rabbi Jerome Epstein, and the talk by Dr. Arnold Eisen, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, on the things that unite us. Read more about the convention.

Sallai Meridor, above right, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, stopped off from the summit in Annapolis to talk to the convention. Here he stands with Rabbi Jerome Epstein.

USY Convention - United Synagogue Youth just finished its annual convention -- more than 1,000 teenagers met in Anaheim, California, and had a rousingly wonderful time. At the convention, Gershom Sizomu, a rabbinical student at the Ziegler School of Rabbinical Studies, was presented with a check for $15,000, raised by USYers. The money will be used to build a yeshiva for Mr. Sizomu’s community, the Abayudaya, in Uganda. More about the convention will follow next month.

New Ideas

Tzohar Orlando - There is misery in the world and there are ways we can help alleviate some of it. Just before our convention, a group of delegates spent a few days learning and helping with Tzohar Orlando.

What's Happening

Inclusion - Because we know that each of us is created in God’s image and so is of unimaginable value, we are working to to sensitize ourselves to how much it matters that our synagogues be accessible to all. Our new webpage has information that can help us; the page, like our own sensitivity, will keep growing.

United Synagogue’s Commission on Inclusion of People with Disabilities, the group that created the webpage, recommends a new movie, Praying With Lior, which explores the intersection of spirituality and disability. It will be screened in various places across North America from now at least through March.

Passover in Las Vegas - Yes, Passover is a family holiday; we spent it at home, with the people we love. But it’s also a lot of work – maybe for once you’d like to take the family and leave the work behind? Consider joining us in the Ritz Carlton Lake Las Vegas for a Conservative Pesach.

USY Summer Programs - Although winter’s not yet started it’s already time to plan for the summer of 2008, and USY’s all over it. You can register for programs that include Classic USY on Wheels; USY on Wheels, Mission: Mitzvah; USY on Wheels, East; Summer in the City; Israel Adventure; Eastern Europe/Israel Pilgrimage; Israel Pilgrimage/Poland Seminar; Spain/Israel Pilgrimage; and Etgar! Outdoor Adventure, Israel. Our summer programs for high-school students provide topnotch staffs, transportation, lodging, sightseeing, and security, and give our participants a strengthened sense of themselves as young Conservative Jews.

USY High - USY High, USY’s program for high-school students in Israel, run jointly with Ramah Israel, is now accepting applications.

Nativ - Nativ, USY’s yearlong program for post-high school students, is now accepting applications. Nativ students spend on semester at the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center, studying either there or at the Hebrew University, and the other semester in a kibbutz or doing another social action project.
