Bragging Rights

USCJ Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center - This summer, a record number of students studied at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in Jerusalem, part of the Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center. According to the center's director, Rabbi Jim Lebeau, the impressive numbers show how deep the Conservative movement's desire for study is, and how well the center can meet those needs.

This summer, 91 students studied at Fuchsberg. Twenty-two of them were college students, 25 were between 23 and 40 years old, and 48 were over 40. Sixty-seven came from the United States, 17 from Europe, 6 from Israel, and one from Korea. The group included rabbis, cantors, rabbinical students, and other Jewish professionals; they were joined by teachers and other educators; counselors and therapists; lawyers; health-care professionals; musicians, artists, and writers; businesspeople, retirees, and a full-time mother.

Directors' Institutes - At the beginning of August, 30 new Hebrew school directors met at United Synagogue headquarters for the New Directors? Institute, five days of discussions, workshops, talking, listening, and learning.

The New Directors' Institute followed Lilmod U'Lilamed, a pilot program aimed at Hebrew school directors who already have at least a few years of experience. The four-day program drew 25 participants; about half were New Directors' Institute graduates.

Seminar Retreat - From July 31 to August 8, 13 participants and 3 staffers gathered at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires for Imun, the seminar retreat designed to train lay leaders in synagogue skills, including reading Torah and haftarah and delivering d'vrei Torah.

Voter registration opened July 1. The voting process will be in two stages, as it was in 1997 and 2002. Registration, which costs $7 per adult, $5 per student, will be open until January 15, 2006, by mail and until February 15 online. Ballots will be distributed starting in mid-November, 2005, and voting will end on February 28.

Mail-in Registration - MERCAZ will be mailing registration forms to its members over the next few weeks, and voters who participated in the 2002 WZO elections will receive registration forms directly from the American Zionist movement. Registration forms also can be downloaded from the MERCAZ website.

Even if you are now a member of MERCAZ or voted in the 2002 WZO elections, you still have to register to vote this year.
