April 2008
A Place At The Table - If it’s still the beginning of the month, there's still time for alumni of our youth programs who find themselves away from home to find themselves a place at a home or congregational seder. Project Reconnect once again offers Kol Dichfin, and so far 239 synagogues, affiliates of United Synagogue, Masorti, or Masorti Olami around the world, will match Jews with seder tables.
Passover in Florida - Yes, Passover is a family holiday; we spend it at home, with the people we love. But it’s also a lot of work – maybe for once you’d like to take the family and leave the work behind? Consider joining us at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, for a Conservative Pesach.
Selling Hametz at College (and Beyond) - With Pesach just around the corner, college students will begin making plans for the holiday. Okay, okay, we know your kids, but even they will make plans – eventually. In the meantime, they can go online to sell the hametz in their dorm rooms and apartments through Koach, United Synagogue’s program for college students. And if you’re no longer a student but you have no outlet through your own synagogue, you are welcome to go to Koach’s website and sell the hametz in your home or office. For more information, email koach@uscj.org.
A New Jewish Approach to Disabilities - In our web section on inclusion, Rabbi Elliot Dorff presents what he calls a Copernican revolution in how Jews should understand and treat people with disabilities, in a paper called Mishneh Ha’Briyyot.
Your Child - The spring issue of Your Child, our emagazine for parents of young children, is now up online. It includes articles about how to celebrate Israel’s 60th birthday with young children, books about Israel for those children, ideas about how to make a lifelong commitment to the people you love, and recommended summer reading.
Read about Project Reconnect - Project Reconnect, the alumni organization for all graduates of Conservative movement youth programs, has posted the latest (and, we are assured, greatest!) edition of its newsletter.
Travel with USY - More than 700 teens already have signed up for our USY summer programs in Israel, North America, and Europe, but there might still be a few spaces left in some programs. Don’t miss your chance for the summer of a lifetime!
New Directors Institute - Becoming the director of a synagogue school is an extremely worthy undertaking – and a formidable one. We offer support, training, and the hard-earned experience of our staff at the New Directors’ Institute from June 23 to June 27. For more information, check out the brochure or email Serene Victor.
Parents USY Trip to Israel - Parents of teenagers going to Israel with USY can share some of their children’s experience as they, too, tour Israel the USY way with the Parent Pilgrimage to Israel, set for July 16 to 28.
Educators on the Move - If you are taking a new job as a synagogue educator, join us for networking and support from July 30 to July 31. For more information, email Serene Victor.
Imun – United Synagogue’s 2008 intensive 9-day workshop for synagogue skills is set for July 6 to July 14 at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires in upstate New York. For more information, email Rabbi Paul Drazen at drazen@uscj.org.

Honoring Claire Spechler - In mid-March, United Synagogue’s Mid-Atlantic region presented the Dr. William B. Lakritz Outstanding Jewish Educator Memorial Award, given for exemplary service in Jewish education, at the Jewish Educators Assembly dinner at Temple Beth Sholom in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The award was given to Claire Spechler, who has spent more than 50 years teaching the Jewish subjects she loves in the community she loves.

Synagogue Executive Directors Meet - Almost 150 people came to NAASE’s annual conference in Philadelphia in March. The organization, the North American Association of Synagogue Executives, celebrated both its 60th year and Israel’s. Participants included many of United Synagogue’s regional directors and other staffers.
Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center
Reception at Fuchsberg - On Monday, June 30, from 6 to 7:45 p.m., the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center will welcome visiting members of United Synagogue’s affiliated congregations at an open house reception.

Pack an Extra Suitcase, Please! - The Geller Gemilut Hesed program at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center always can use extra toys, toiletries, new clothing for children, used wedding dresses, and other such items. If you are planning a trip to Israel and can bring an extra suitcase, please pack those items and bring them over to Fuchsberg. They will be distributed to the needy.
Learn on Monday evenings in Jerusalem - The next time you plan a trip to Jerusalem, take a look at the educational programming the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism’s Fuchsberg Jerusalem Center offers through Project Oded and the Monday Evening Forum.
Purim at Fuchsberg - The Center on Campus program, which is affiliated with Koach, United Synagogue’s program for college students, held a Purim party for overseas and Israel students. (The program was cosponsored with the Rothberg International School of the Hebrew University, Beit Hillel, and Marom.) More than 300 students celebrated Esther’s triumph.
Around the Conservative/ Masorti World

Celebrate Israel the Conservative/Masorti Way - The organizations that make up the Conservative movement, including United Synagogue's Israel Commission, have joined to offer a website that showcases our celebrations as the state of Israel turns 60.
New Siddur Commentary
Or Hadash: A Commentary on Siddur Sim Shalom for Weekdays by Rabbi Reuven Hammer explains prayers in their contexts – the prayer's history, theology, and relationship to the prayers around it. The book is a joint project of United Synagogue and the Rabbinical Assembly. $40.
