 Letters To Promote Change

"I've never written a letter to a congressman before, what do i do?!"

Tell the member of Congress EXACTLY what course of action you would like him/her to take, such as co-sponsoring or opposing a specific bill. Making a suggestion for a plan of action is key if you hope to make a difference!

Tell the congress person why he/she should take the course of action you propose.

Be ORIGINAL. Express your own thought on the issue in your own writing style. DON’T SOUND FAKE!

Be brief and to the point. They won’t read long letters.

Always type your letters. Include your address on the letter itself, as envelopes are usually discarded in the trash.

Don’t mention affiliation with any groups. This letter needs to be from YOU.

Don’t cover more than one subject. If you have multiple issues, write multiple letters. They sort out the letters by issue in the congressmen’s offices.

Don’t include EVERY argument you know. Instead, use the ones that are most compelling.

Don’t send copies to multiple people. Every congress person should receive a DIFFERENT personalized letter.

Remember to write a follow-up letter after you receive a letter back. If your congress person agreed, write back expressing appreciation. If they disagreed, argue your points again. If they didn’t address the issue, write back with specific questions.
