Shabbat Shalom Hanefesh!!!

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week and have recuperated fully from the lack of sleep had at the AMAZING Mid-Winter Kinnus! Yasher Koach again to the co-chairs for an incredible convention!

As many of you know, I LOVE to sing. So naturally, this Shabbat is a particular favorite of mine. This Shabbat is Shabbat Shirah, Shabbat of Song – labeled such because of the three songs we read in the Torah and Haftorah combined: In the Torah - Moses’s Song: shirat hayam, Miriam’s Song, and in the Haftorah - the song of Devorah. Many of you may recognize Moses’s song, “Az Yashir Moshe” as the prayer we sing every morning during Shacharit. However most of us are unfamiliar with Miriam’s song. “Miriam, the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women came out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam called out to them, Sing to the Lord, for very exalted is He; a horse and its rider He cast into the sea” (Ex. 15:20-21). So why is this song so important? While Miriam’s song is simple and short, her passion inspires all the people of Israel to join in singing and dancing. The message: If you are passionate about something, proclaim it and encourage others to have similar excitement. Enjoy a wonderful Shabbat of Song!

Also, it is time to get excited because on Monday February 13th, Jews around the world will be celebrating Tu B’Shvat! Tu B’Shvat is the New Year of the Trees. It is customary to eat fruit of the seven species (barley, dates, figs, grapes, pomegranates, olives, and wheat) and to plant trees. If you would like to have a tree planted in Israel in your name visit http://www.jnf.org/site/PageServer?pagename=trees
