About SATO

What is Social Action?

In USY, we interpret the phrase Gemilut Hasadim, “acts of loving kindness”, in many ways. We reach out to our communities, creating programs to help Jews throughout the world and even within our own synagogues.

Social Action programs can be fun and enjoyable, and help the chapter feel as though they have really made a difference to someone or something in the world. If any opportunity jumps out, do not hesitate to go out and help. Every action can make a difference.

What is Tikun Olam?

Tikun Olam literally means, “rebuilding the world”, and it is USY’s official tzedakah fund. Tzedakah comes from the word Tzedek, meaning justice, and in a more figurative sense, monetary charity. Since 1956, USY has raised over $2 million for Tikun Olam.

The money for Tikun Olam is divided up-30% to scholarships, 30% to Israel/Expenses (including NATIV trips), and 40% allocated to various organizations. The money collected from Tikun Olam has made a great impact to those around the world. It is your job to ensure that USY continues to contribute great amounts of tzedakah to help to repair the world.
