Resolution on Gun Control 2012

Whereas we recognize the right of gun ownership afforded by the second amendment of the United States Constitution and,

Whereas in previous resolutions in 1993 and in 1995 the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism called for restrictions on use of assault rifles and,

Whereas we feel that we must continue to address the public safety concerns associated with widespread ownership of high capacity weapons and,

Whereas the U.S. Federal ban on assault weapons of 1994 expired by sunset provision in 2004 and,

Whereas assault rifles and high-capacity magazines have been used in virtually every high-profile shooting in recent history, including at Columbine High School in 1999 where 13 people were killed, at Virginia Tech in 2007 where 33 people were killed, in Tucson in 2011, where six people were killed and 13 people including Representative Giffords were injured, in a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado in July 2012 where 12 people were killed and in a Sikh gurdwara (temple) in Oak Creek, Wisconsin in August 2012 where  7 people were killed and,

Whereas these shootings and murders, committed using automatic assault rifles with high capacity magazines, have shocked our public conscience and,

Whereas recent bills have been introduced in the Senate would establish federal restrictions on large capacity gun magazines and would ban the sale or transfer of large capacity feeders like magazines, belts, feed stripes and drums that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition

Therefore, be it resolved that the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism calls on members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to support these measures and, therefore,

Be it further resolved that the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism calls on the President to support restrictions on the availability of assault rifles and high capacity magazines.
