Yom Hashoah (1993)
WHEREAS, the annihilation of millions of European Jews, and the total destruction of thousands of Jewish communities throughout Nazi-occupied Europe, between 1933 and 1945 at the hands of hundreds of thousands of Germans and their multi-national accomplices, acting at the behest of the German Government, constituted the greatest catastrophe in modern Jewish history; and
WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon the entire Jewish community to ensure that the memory of the Holocaust becomes an integral and permanent part of the religious and national Jewish consciousness; and
WHEREAS, the 27th Day of Nisan has been officially designated as Yom Hashoah, the official day of mourning and remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM calls upon all of its affiliated congregations to formally observe Yom Hashoah on an annual basis, and to do everything possible so that the greatest number of Jews can participate in such observances; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM calls upon all of its affiliated congregations to respect the solemnity of Yom Hashoah by not scheduling business meetings or other congregational events that conflict with the formal observance of Yom Hashoah; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM reaffirms its support of the Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs Yellow Yahrzeit Candle program; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM provide congregations with appropriate materials for Yom Hashoah commemorations.
