Resolutions by Year >> 1993 >> Violence and Pro-Choice

Violence and Pro-Choice (1993)

WHEREAS, the differences in religious beliefs, vis-à-vis the issue of abortion, have led to intolerance, violence and, in some instances, murder, by those who do not agree with the right of a woman to freely make her own reproductive choices; and

WHEREAS, the same element of the American population has continually pressured for legislation to restrict the ability of all women, regardless of their financial ability, to make their own reproductive choices, and

WHEREAS, the medical profession has been harassed and threatened so that many doctors have refused to perform abortions for fear of their lives and the lives of their families.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM calls upon its affiliated congregations to urge their legislators to enact legislation:

  1. To protect the right of a woman to freely make her own reproductive choices, and to protect those medical facilities and personnel who provide such medical services; and
  2. To encourage law enforcement officers to adequately carry out the mandate to enforce the law, as well as punish those who illegally interfere with this freedom of choice.
