Rabbi Hammerman is a graduate of the Joint Program of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary where he also received a Masters degree, rabbinic ordination and an honorary doctoral degree. For over 40 years, he has been intimately involved in almost every aspect of the Conservative/Masorti Movement on either a professional or voluntary basis including: Administrative Staff-Camp Ramah; Director of Collegiate Activities-United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism; Faculty-Solomon Schechter Academy of Ocean and Monmouth Counties; International Vice President-World Council of Conservative/Masorti Synagogues; Executive Board-Schechter Institute, Jerusalem; Founding Board Member-Foundation for Masorti Israel; Member-JTS Chancellors Rabbinic Cabinet; Rabbinic Cabinet-Conservative Yeshiva, Jerusalem; Representative-Leadership Council for Conservative Judaism; Officer-Mercaz; Chairman-Joint Campaign for Rabbinical Assembly Jewish Theological Seminary -Masorti, Israel.

In 2005 Rabbi Hammerman retired as Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation B'nai Israel, Toms River, New Jersey after serving as its rabbi and community leader and activist for over 31 years.   Joining the Professional Staff of Congregation Agudath Israel, Caldwell as Executive Director in February 2008. Rabbi Hammerman shepherded the congregation into its newly rebuilt facility, concluded the re-construction of the synagogue building and added the finishing touches to the  renewed Congregation Agudath Israel building.
