Biography:Â Joe grew up in St. Louis (Cong. B'nai Amoona) and was a camper, and then several years on staff, at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin. He graduated from the Joint Program at JTS-Columbia (majoring in Talmud and music respectively. He went on to get an MA in Jewish Education at JTS and finished a doctorate in education at Columbia Teachers College. He and his wife, Sue (whom he met at Camp Ramah, where else?) and two children went on aliya to Israel in 1980. Two more children were born in Jerusalem.
After working part-time with Ramah Programs in Israel (RPI), and then a few years full-time at Hebrew University's Melton Centre, he began full-time work at RPI in 1986 as Director of the Ramah Seminar. Since 2000 he has been Director of RPI.
After finishing the Ministry of Tourism course, Joe became a licensed tour guide in 1996 and since then has guided many groups (especially congregational Israel trips) in the context of Ramah as well as a freelancer. He is also licensed to drive a van approved by the Ministry of Tourism. He has designed and led many educational trips to Eastern Europe (Poland and Prague) and to Spain. Accompanying himself on guitar, Joe uses music a great deal in his guiding. He is also a certified Israeli Folk Dance instructor and has guided groups of folk-dancers in Israel.
Joe is available to serve as a Scholar in Residence for a weekend, or more, at a synagogue and/or to design and guide educational Israel trips. |
