Biography:Â Hazzan David F. Tilman was born in Albany, New York. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College, the diploma of Hazzan and Bachelor of Sacred Music degree from the H.L.Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where he majored in choral conducting. Hazzan Tilman served for 6 years as Hazzan Sheni at the Park Avenue Synagogue in NYC, and as Hazzan of Beth Sholom Congregation in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, for 36 years, becoming Hazzan Emeritus in 2011. Under his direction, Beth Sholom Congregation received the Solomon Schechter Prize for the best Performing Arts Program, 4 times! He created and directed an award winning program of 5 different choirs. The Beth Sholom Youth Chorale, Adult Chorale, and Men's Choir, toured Israel and Eastern Europe. Hazzan Tilman served as Music Director at Ramah in Wingdale and Nyack, and at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute, Simi Valley, California.
Since his retirement, he has been appointed adjunct associate professor at the H.L.Miller Cantorial School of JTS, teaching Jewish Music Education, Conducting, and directing the Chorus. |

- Weekend workshops, or individual session, with resident youth choir and/or adult choir, to work on musicianship, singing techniques, repertoire building, culminating in a public concert
- Exodus: Chapter 15-Shirat Hayam: The Very First Jewish Choral Festival! An analysis of the very first musical activity in the Torah, covering the historical context, the unusual trope, and the beautiful calligraphy.. We study Shirat Hayam in "Israel in Egypt" by G.F.Handel, and The Prince of Egypt, with music by Stephen Schwartz.
- Aseret Hadibrot: The Ten Commandments! How this reading is chanted in Exodus and Deuteronomy. We will learn what the trope teaches us about the meaning of the text!
- The Music of Debbie Friedman and Shlomo Carlebach: How these personalities have changed the way we pray!
- Leil Shirah: An Evening of Community Singing of the Golden Israeli Songs, employing an accordion or keyboard and powerpoint presentation of Hebrew lyrics with transliterations projected on a screen. Congregants are encouraged to bring instruments to play along.
