Project 2 - Office for Farm Worker Ministry (Catholic): The Gleaning Project

The migrant workers who work around Orlando are mainly from Central and South America. Volunteers would be involved in actual farm work, harvesting vegetables or citrus fruit as a way of experiencing firsthand what migrant workers experience. The gleaned food is donated to local food banks. Afterward, Sister Anne Kendrick, who directs the project, would share with us her knowledge of the immigrant community, particularly the farm workers, the history of the immigrant communities in this part of Florida, the problems these families face in their native countries that convince them to migrate, and the problems they face as migrant workers. We would meet with high school students from the migrant farm worker community to hear directly from them about the challenges they face. Finally, we will attempt to arrange to meet with migrant farm worker families to share their experiences.
