USCJ EC Staff Meeting Shiur - November 2005

"God appeared to him [Abraham] in the Plains of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance of the tent in the heat of the day. [Abraham] lifted his eyes and saw: Behold! Three men were standing over him. He perceived, so he ran toward them from the entrance of his tent, and bowed toward the ground. And he said, 'My lord, if I find favor in your eyes, please do not go on past your servant. Let some water be brought, and wash your feet, and recline beneath the tree. I will fetch a morsel of bread that you may sustain yourselves, then go on- inasmuch as you have passed your servant's way.' They said, 'Do so, just as you have said.'

"Abraham rushed to the tent to Sarah and said, 'Hurry! Three se'ahs [measures] of the finest flour! Knead and make cakes.' Then Abraham ran to the cattle, took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the youth, who hurried to prepare it. He took curds and milk, and the calf that he prepared, and he placed these before them [his guests]. He stood over them beneath the tree and they ate."

- Genesis 18:1-8

Questions for Discussion:

  1. What actions did Abraham take?
  2. What was his level of enthusiasm or energy? How do we know?
  3. From this passage in Beresheit (Genesis), we get the Jewish value of hachnasat orchim, hospitality. What does this text teach us about how we should extend hospitality?
  4. How is hachnasat orchim a part of your life?
  5. How do we teach this value to young children, and make hachnasat orchim a living, vital part of our children's experience in our classrooms and our families' experience in our school?
