November 15, 2012 (New York, NY) – Stating that Israel – like all nations – has the right and responsibility to defend its citizens, Rabbi Steven Wernick, CEO of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ), defended Israel’s new military action -- Operation Pillar of Defense.

“The Israeli Defense Force acted with patience, prudence and vigilance, waiting out a rocket barrage of hundreds of rockets from Gaza that lasted several weeks before striking back,” said Rabbi Wernick. “It is unconscionable to deny Israel the right to protect its population from enemy attack. The ongoing assault against Israeli civilians in the south is a threat that no other nation would have tolerated for as long. The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, representing over 600 kehillot in North America, stands with the government and people of Israel now and always.”

Rabbi Wernick recently made news by censuring the Protestant members of the Christian Jewish Roundtable for sending a letter to the United States Congress that called for an investigation into U.S. military aid to Israel in the face of alleged human rights violations by the Israel Defense Forces.  “As brazen acts of atrocity take place across the globe and the Israeli military – acting in a defensive capacity – is singled out for accusations of human rights violations, the accusers are guilty of imposing a dangerous double standard to the Jewish State,” he said at the time.

Created in 2004 with the aim of bringing Jewish and Christian leaders together during a period of rapid disintegration in relations owing to differing views of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Christian-Jewish Roundtable was an important venue for dialogue across denominational lines. In addition to releasing a statement, the USCJ and other Jewish groups cancelled their participation in an October Roundtable meeting.
