Intergroup Relations (1993)

WHEREAS, the greatness of our society is predicted on diversity which requires mutual tolerance and respect among all races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, inter-racial, inter-ethnic, and inter-religious tensions and antagonisms have in numerous instances intensified throughout North America in recent years, especially in its urban centers; and

WHEREAS, such tensions threaten the stability of society and its democratic institutions; and

WHEREAS, in many instances such tensions and antagonisms have been exacerbated by inflammatory statements and the failure of political, communal, and religious leaders to intercede in conflict situations or to disassociate themselves from racist or anti-semitic spokemen; and

WHEREAS, the furtherance of harmony and cooperation among the various elements of society has been, and must continue to be, a primary goal of the American Jewish Community; and

WHEREAS, those who work to ease inter-racial, inter-ethnic and inter-religious tensions contribute to Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM:

  1. reaffirms its long standing position against all forms of racism, anti-semitism, or incitement against any ethnic or religious group; and
  2. calls upon all of its affiliated congregations to develop year-round community relations programs and to participate in their respective communities with other religious ethnic and civic groups, organizations and religious institutions in constructive efforts to ease group tensions, and to improve the harmonious relations among such groups.
