Fundamentalists and The Resurgent "Religious Right" (1993)
WHEREAS, the recent re-emergence of the fundamentalist religious right in the political arena raises questions about the appropriate role of religion in public life; and
WHEREAS, the fundamentalist religious right has contested and intends to continue contesting local political offices, especially seats in municipal councils and school boards; and
WHEREAS, the policies of the fundamentalist religious right are often diametrically opposed to the positions of Conservative Judaism.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM calls upon its congregations to join with their local Jewish Community Relations Councils, as well as other civic and religious bodies, in monitoring the activities of the fundamentalist religious right; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM calls upon its affiliated congregations to take all appropriate steps to ensure that their members actively participate in the political process, especially on the local level, to make certain that the views on Conservative Judaism are expressed.
