Continued Responsibility for Social Action (2002)
WHEREAS the United Synagogue has a long history of involving itself and its congregations in social action issues, those mandated by our commitment to social justice, preservation of our democratic values and provision of a safety net for the less fortunate; and
WHEREAS the cataclysmic terrorist attack on American institutions, continuing terrorist violence in Israel, corporate financial disasters, and a variety of world events have understandably become the major concern of our government and most Americans; and
WHEREAS, the mandate of the United Synagogue requires the continued providing of guidelines to our congregations on social action policies and activities;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the United Synagogue urge its congregations to continue to be involved in the broad range of social action issues as articulated by its resolutions and its Commission on Social Action, which in coordination with its President and Board of Directors, continues to have a major responsibility in interpreting current developments and priorities and, of recommending programmatic activities to congregations.
